My name is Alexander Barrett. For me, quilting is letting go. I might begin with a concept or a color palette, but once I start moving, my thinking mind turns off and I watch a form take shape.
In that flow, time disappears and is—sooner or later—replaced by a quilt.
I would not know how to do what I do without the guidance and support of my quilt mentors:
Maggie Muth and Miss Stella Mae Pettway.
As a white man working in a field almost entirely invented and guided by women, I must acknowledge the women from West Africa and the entire African Diaspora, from Korea, from Gee’s Bend Alabama, from Pennsylvania, and from New England whose love and innovation allow me to make the quilts I make.
